Research topic

The subject of the research is the development, at the laboratory scale, of an environmentally friendly chemical recycling strategy for two generations of CFRP composites based on thermoplastic resin, manufactured within the project.

SCOPE OF RESEARCH

  • Validation of chemical recycling conditions will be carried out to recover fibres and the resin matrix suitable for reuse in VARI or RTM processes (VARI – Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion, RTM – Resin Transfer Moulding).
  • An environmentally friendly solvent from the group of glycols and/or carbonates will be selected as a sustainable alternative to the toxic solvents used to date, such as acetone, xylene, or DMF.
  • Ageing and mechanical tests as well as LCC and LCA analyses will be conducted. These activities will enable a reduction in energy consumption and waste generation, while taking environmental aspects into account within the framework of the circular economy (CE) concept.
  • The development of a second-life strategy for CFRP using production processes based on thermoplastic fibre-reinforced composites will further contribute to reducing the consumption of natural resources and the amount of waste generated.

TASKS

  1. Project management: reporting, internal communication, preparation and publication of dissemination materials.
  2. Requirements analysis: analysis of technical requirements and expectations regarding the necessary components for the VARI/RTM and TF methods.
  3. Production of test samples using the VARI/RTM or TF process: manufacturing of structures using thermoplastic composites (TP-CFRP) through VARI/RTM and TF processes. This task includes material selection and assessment of recyclability potential.
  4. Material characterization for FRP: conducting mechanical and ageing tests of materials in order to determine their properties and durability across several life cycles.
  5. Chemical recycling: development of methods for dissolving and recovering fibres and resin matrices from TP-CFRP samples, with an emphasis on the use of environmentally friendly solvents.
  6. Economic and environmental analyses: performing life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of the developed materials and processes.

Meeting of the ReDesign Project Consortium Members

On March 3, 2026, during the INNOFORM 2026 trade fair, another meeting of the consortium members of the ReDesign (CORNET) project took place, together with representatives of the project’s User Committee.

The meeting provided an opportunity to summarize the activities carried out so far within the project, present preliminary results of the work, and exchange experiences among the partners. Participants also discussed the next stages of the project’s implementation and the actions planned for the coming period.

After the closed part of the meeting, a project presentation addressed to a wider group of participants and trade fair visitors was also held. The project’s objectives and the results achieved so far were presented by Damian Kielkiewicz.
